Woman Whose Mother Passed As White Introduces Her Mixed-Race Family Members | Megyn Kelly TODAY

[ APPLAUSE ]>>>WELCOME BACK, EVERYONE. WE’RE HERE WITH GAIL LUKASIK, WHO HAS RECENTLY DISCOVERED SHE HAS A WHOLE NEW FAMILY AFTER UNCOVERING HER MOTHER’S SECRET. HER MOTHER WAS LIVING AS A WHITE WOMAN BUT WAS MIXED RACE. JOINING US NOW, GAIL’S HALF-UNCLE, AZEMAR FREDRIC AND STEPHANIE FREDRIC. AT THE CRUX OF THE INVESTIGATION WAS A SEARCH FOR HER MOM’S DAD, AZEMAR. YOUR MOM’S MOM WAS IN YOUR LIFE. AND SHE LOOKED WHITE. BUT YOUR MOM’S DAD WAS NOT IN YOU DIDN’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HIM. BUT YOU ARE THAT MAN’S SON. YOUR GRANDAD WAS AZEMAR. HE HAD A SECOND FAMILY AFTER THE FAMILY HE STARTED WITH GAIL’S MOM. AND THERE WERE FIVE KIDS. YOU’RE ONE OF THEM. AND, STEPHANIE, YOU’RE AZEMAR’S DAUGHTER.>>CORRECT. THAT’S VERY GOOD.>>THAT TOOK A LOT OF HOMEWORK. AZEMAR, WHAT DID YOU BELIEVE IN TERMS OF YOUR DAD’S RACE AND YOUR RACE?>>WE LIVED IN THE MOSTLY ITALIAN NEIGHBORHOOD. THERE WAS ONE ASIAN MAN AND IT WAS OUR FAMILY. WE DIDN’T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.>>WAS YOUR DAD, DID YOU THINK HE WAS BLACK? HOW DID HE APPEAR TO YOU?>>I KNEW HIM AS DAD.>>SO, RACE WASN’T EVEN AN ISSUE. ONE OF THE MOST BIZARRE THINGS OF THIS WHOLE STORY, AS GAIL IS WRITING THIS BOOK, STEPHANIE IS WORKING ON A DOCUMENTARY CALLED –>>”LIGHT GIRLS.”>>HOW LIGHT SKIN.>>HOW IN AMERICA, LIGHT SKIN WAS PREFERRED OVER DARK SKIN. AND I KNEW I HAD RACIAL PASSING IN MY FAMILY. MY DAD’S FAMILY, LOVE THEM. BUT THEY HELD A LOT OF SECRETS. WE DIDN’T KNOW, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE ASK YOU ALL THE TIME. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS?>>YEAH.>>YOU LOOK AT THE FAMILY. YOU SEE THE PICTURE, WE DIDN’T KNOW. QUITE FRANKLY, WE’RE YOUNG, WE DIDN’T CARE. THIS IS DAD. YOU KNOW? LOVE HIM.>>FORTUNATE THING ABOUT OUR SOCIETY, IT MAKES YOU KNOW, RIGHT?>>EXACTLY.>>THAT’S WHY YOUR MOM MADE THE CHOICE SHE DID. AND ONE OF THE TAKEAWAYS OF THIS BOOK, IS THAT RACE IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT.>>THAT WAS MY TAKEAWAY.>>EXPLAIN THAT.>>HERE’S THE BEST WAY FOR ME TO EXPLAIN IT. I GIVE A LOT OF PRESENTATIONS AND PEOPLE SAY, HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY NOW THAT YOU KNOW OF YOUR BACKGROUND? I SAY, I IDENTIFY, I’M A WHITE WOMAN AS A MIXED RACE HERITAGE. I WAS SOCIALIZED AS A WHITE WOMAN. I GREW UP IN A WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THAT’S WHAT I KNOW. THAT’S MY UPBRINGING. THAT’S A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT IN MY MIND.>>WHEN A FRIEND OF YOURS SAW GAIL ON “GENEALOGY ROAD SHOW.” DID THEY KNOW SHE MIGHT HAVE A CONNECTION TO YOU? HOW DID YOU SAY I’M GOING TO SEND GAIL AN E-MAIL?>>OUR “LIGHT GIRLS” DOCUMENTARY HAD JUST AIRED ON OWN. MY FRIEND CALLS. AND I THOUGHT SHE WAS CALLING TO SAY, HEY, STEPH, GREAT DOC. SHE CAREFULLY LEADS ME DOWN THE ROAD, TALKING ABOUT HER FAMILY AND WANTING TO KNOW HER FAMILY HISTORY. BY THE WAY, THERE WAS THIS WOMAN ON TELEVISION LAST NIGHT. I WAS JUST FLIPPING THROUGH CHANNELS. AND SHE MENTIONED YOUR FATHER’S NAME. SHE IS LOOKING FOR HER FAMILY IN NEW ORLEANS. AND SHE SAID, STEPHANIE, SHE’S A WHITE WOMAN. AND I SAID, WELL, YOU KNOW, THAT’S POSSIBLE. AND I THOUGHT, WHAT THE HECK HAS DAD DONE? I SAID, I AM GOING TO HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, BUFFER THIS FOR MY MOTHER WHO WAS SICK AT THE TIME. I SAID, LET ME GET IN FRONT OF THIS. AND I HURRIEDLY TRIED TO FIND THE DOCUMENTARY AND WATCH IT. I WATCHED IT AND SAID, YEAH, SHE’S FAMILY. I SAW THE PICTURE OF HER MOTHER. AND I SAID, SHE LOOKS JUST LIKE MY FATHER’S FAMILY. OF COURSE. WE SHARE THE SAME GRANDFATHER.>>AND GAIL HAD REVELATIONS IN HER OWN LIFE, TOO, WHERE HER DAUGHTER LOOKS MORE LIKE YOU. BUT YOUR SON WAS MORE OLIVE COMPLEXI COMPLEXION.>>YES.>>AND YOUR HUSBAND IS VERY FAIR, TOO. YOU HAD AHA MOMENTS, TOO.>>MY SON FAVORS MY MOTHER. AND SHE USED TO SAY, HE’S MY FAVORITE BECAUSE HE LOOKS LIKE ME. AND NOBODY ELSE LOOKS LIKE ME. SO, YEAH. ABSOLUTELY.>>THE BOOK IS FASCINATING. AND IT’S A COMMENT NOT JUST ON GAIL’S FAMILY AND THE SECRET-KEEPING BUT ON OUR SOCIETY AND ITS HISTORY WHEN IT COMES TO RACE. THANK YOU FOR TELLING THE STORY. ALL OF YOU.>>THANK YOU.>>AGAIN, THE BOOK IS CALLED

  1. U should not be ashamed what u r black/white. We're all human beings. Does not matter what country ya from. We all should get on with eachother.

  2. Megyn is part of the “society” (racists) that make you know! Some of us will not forget her racist past on Fox faux news, Never forget!

  3. Amazing but sometimes you can understand the reasons for people of color preferring to pass for white. It must be mental torture for them though

  4. I always wondered what happens to mixed families like this. It was very interesting. Her mother was both black and white, I find it crazy that people are saying and are upset she took the easier option or that she was privileged for choosing to live as a white person. I'm sure it would have been just as hard is not harder for her to identify and live as a mixed or black person. Had she identified as mixed she could have been an outcast to both black and white communities (I'm assuming she wouldn't have been accepted by both in the times she grew up). She made best with what she had. As we can clearly see she had very fair skin and probably couldn't have passed for being black if she wanted to… By being proud of a part of you doesn't have to mean you are ashamed of the other.

  5. Interesting indeed & I love the way that Gail Lukasik dealt with her past & it was pity that her mother wasn't allowed to tell her family of her famil history due to the fact that her father was a racist, so her mother did everything possible to keep up the charade, for fear of losing her husband & her standing in the community . It was an era when racism & bigotry were prevalent & she felt intimidated to be cast as a person of the black race.
She did try & found her family heritage & was delighted with she found out regarding other members of her family.

  6. This reminds me of one of my favorite movies I'll wait any guess ?.and it's not guess who's coming to dinner.

  7. Race isn't even an issue… right, Megyn. Right…

So, why is it being talked about?

    Moving on… moving on…

  8. Stop hidin secrets & tell the truth i dnt care who it hurts. Because where dying not knowing.
Show u care & shame the Devil & tell the truth. I exspect ah whole series of show revealing the truth bout the lies our elders kept frm us.
Its important 4 us all 2 no so tht we can start this healing process. So many hve already died not knowing .
Now tell us the truth 🙏🙏🙏

  9. I'm really shocked how people in 2019 don't know that the majority of humans are mixed I'm dark skinned, but my great grandad was white as white could be ( from a family called COUNCIL) Through research I got a DNA kit, and it's all colors in my family. But I was raised up knowing this.

  10. listen, I just found out my birth certificate said I'm clear!!!! me & silver surfer have been phoning each other since. call me, hear my story…😁

  11. I think it is so sad that people should identify by race… Why not just what country your from ? I`m Norwegian living in Norway

  12. It’s funny how people view being white and black so differently when it only takes one generation to turn you into the other.

  13. Race is not a social construct. No matter how educated I am or how well I speak or how many white friends I have I will always be treated how I look AS AN UNAMBIGUOUS BLACK WOMAN

  14. I find it funny after all the research and discovery of the truth! she's still not willing to give up that white privilege! she just can't get past that "BLACK" part of it. I'm just saying.

  15. This subject gets sooo boring. I am an American Heinz 57. The Democratic Media and Oprah will keep it a hot topic to maintain the social divide they created! I go out my front door and am surrounded by many different shades of humans and not ever a problem. Just on the Television!

  16. That sure looks like Deanna "Dee" Wallace in the background. She was Mom in ET. I met her on the set of a Christmas movie, "Every other weekend" I always loved her and I have to say that I was a wreck asking for her photo because we were NOT supposed to do that as an extra and I didnt want to start it and get her mobbed. Sure enough, Everyone mobbed her and I was shoved cameras at me to take their pics with her. I felt horrible and almost said never mind I dont need a pic. The people were so rude that they didnt even think to ask me do you want a pic with her, I will take the picture for you. HORRIBLE. I must say that she was very sweet and still just beautiful. If she is reading this, Im Joyce then one who started all of that and I am sorry. I thought for sure she would hate me and I would get fired but I just loved her so much in my favorite movie "ET". It sure looks like her on that set, if not then it is her twin.

  17. Why isn't the show promoting Gail the black woman's documentary as well? "White like Her"…she is white because she is 25%black at best..her Children 10-15%
Its sad that they lost touch with their family. This is real life though.

  18. I really don't understand why the race issue is still that much important in the US in 2019. I mean come on ppl! We all are humans. No difference to another. Our superiority is not up to our race ör heritage, it is in our personalities that makes us superior to another. I mean at least i was thinking that we left all these race issues behind cuz its silly to have a conflict on it. We All Are Humans!

  19. At the end of the day the hate should stop because nobody is pure we're all mixed up with something .

  20. It breaks my heart to know how people have suffered all because of skin color. Extremely sad and ridiculous.
Praising Heavenly Father for giving me parents that raised me to rage against racism and all discrimination.

  21. She said she identified her self with being white and her mother being mixed race. As she said she was socialisation white. That really dont mean what u are inside cant hide

  22. Many native Americans would pass as Hispanic in the late 1800s and early 1900s. My great grand mother did this, as was put in an American speaking orphanage and removed from her tribe and family.

  23. I think these people are in it together, these people are white, come on people don't fall for this stupid story. Look how pasty white that old dude is, you know how she identifies her self, better than you white woman. Hey my uncle is from Mars, we don't look like aliens , but we are, come on.

  24. I think it is sad that people can't just be who they are, whatever race they are born into and EVERYONE accept it!! As the old saying goes, on the inside we are all the same. We have the same kind of body parts and the same colour of blood. What a wonderful world this would be if there was NO racism – and I do mean that on ALL sides!!!

  25. We are all the same, superficial things such as skin color should not be an issue, and that issue is the root of all problems

  26. I'm mexican and I have a lot of background. I have white, black, native american, middle eastern and asian. The whole world flows through my veins. So happy to have all these ethnicities. By this day, race shouldn't be a thing at all. I'm a citizen of the world, that's all that matters.

  27. I saw video of a case in India where an Indian couple had a light skinned baby, no the mother hadn't cheated they had what's known as a "throwback" baby, where far in the past someone in the family had had a relationship with a white person. Well many generations later this pale child shows up, it wasn't until she went to Europe as a teen for university that she saw people of many different colors.

  28. If her mom passed as white then she WAS white. The only real definition of white is a person people consider white.

  29. There is a quinten tarantino file called true romance check out sicilian scene warning it is very vulgar but yeah not sure if its completely true.

  30. I am from a mixed family as well. We where never taught race. Love is love is love. I didn’t see color until I was 17 and hubby pointed out that grandpa was white. It’s the most shocking thing I had ever heard

  31. I have black friends, male & female, some look more black than others. What i love about them is that they never seem to think about “what” they are, they just “are.” If they want something in life, they go for it. All would be considered productive & successful by any standards. They have never used their color to get what they wanted. They got their educations & have solid careers. To tell you the truth, i don’t think they would be comfortable dwelling on their skin color.

  32. I had a Black friend who once worked in New Orleans and said that those were some of the most racist people he had ever met. He was referring to mixed raced Black people. The ones like the white woman's new-found family members. The ones with the very light complexion. He said that they made it clear that dark-skinned Blacks were beneath them and that they went to great lengths to no socialize with them or, HEAVEN FORBID, allow their offspring to have children with them.

  33. My grandpa was only a quarter black and could have passed for white but never did… I know he had a few aunts that ran off and passed for white… I’m grateful he didn’t…he was the coolest grandpa ever

  34. Is there a black woman who has found out that she has white heritage and has gone to this extreme to write a book about It? White to black is an issue; black to white is not?

  35. I did my dna test and before i had always thought that i would have native american ancestry just by looking at a great grandparent on both sides who seemed to have a mixture. And it was always said that my great grandmother was part cherokee. Come to find out that i am 12% european white and 1% native american…Ooooops! I’m black btw.

  36. I have read some of the replys my grandpa was mixed his mother was mixed passed to be white my grandpa was a very dark man his daughter is dark my father is white with olive skin tone my mother was born with blond hair I was born white with blond hair my sister is olive tone with black eyes she looks Mexican am I consider black no I was born white with black ansistery

  37. this is so ridiculous!! race is not a social construct.. her mother had fair skin and that's it… as foreigner I find so funny how people describe themselves… we don't say white here… for people with very fair skin and light eye color we say caucassian… why do people define themselves by the color of their skin????

  38. im passing for a jew. I will not give up my hundreds of millions just to claim black and be broke again. Sorry people, go fish.

  39. See white ppl~you may be hating killing and destroying your uncles aunts and cousins…think about it~there's only one race~THE HUMAN RACE!

  40. sad, this identification with what we're not, who cares, it really amazes me, all the fuss. we're not the body folks, we're not our background too.

  41. The real issue is hidden . All need to learn either like it or not. God was creative when creating humans , we are all created like the colors of the Earth's clay. God doesn'take mistakes all colors are beautiful . And onecolor does not dominate the other all colors are needed to creat a puzzle . Thank you God for life and your beautiful creativity.

  42. My grandmother was darker than all her family because her dad was Indian. When she went to visit her grandmother people thought she was her servant. My granny hate visiting her grandmother in mississippi because of it.

  43. This woman has an amazing outlook on her own ethnicity! "Race" is entirely irrelevant. And shout out I'm from New Orleans. All white here tho.. lol. Having family is the best part. 💙

  44. You grew up white and steeped in the white culture. Your mother was probably of the 1/5 rule. So what do you consider to be your biggest problem? You should read the following books, Cane River, Lalita Tademy, (2001) fam. in Louisiana, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, James Weldon Johnson (1990-) and The Free People of New Orleans, Mary Gehman ( 1994-2000). Many people passed if they could. If you don't know the whole history of enslavement and the aftermath up to today 21st century-2019, it might be to your benefit to take a course in African American History. I am not Black, however, my interest in the human condition has defined me and because of that, I have libraries consisting of AA History, Native American, Latin Cultures and others in European culture. It is an amazing world and I guarantee that once you have read, you will feel like you belong anywhere. Don't let this fluke in your life restrict you. EMBRACED YOUR WORLD !

  45. Thanks 2 God I'm black & very proud of it black & white we are all human ok all some 2 God always be u love all human there 😍😍😍♥️✔✔

  46. Because racism is taught by the schools by people notice how this man didn't look at his father as black but looked at him his father but everybody wants him to say his father was black he looks at his father as father

  47. Dwayne Johnson and Van Diesel is true example of black white American. Their father was black, but their feature is more like white, and they do love their family trail..black or white, we share the same blood..Allah blessed all..

  48. 40 percent german here but have African congolese ancestors and Native American ancestors. I was extremely pleased about that because it explains my olive skin, high cheekbones and dark curly thick hair which would of been great if i had known i always felt like I was missing something…🤔 and also how adding oil to my hair would of helped all those years which thankfully i figured it out as an adult. God , i remember my mom ripping through my hair as as kid as she brushed it without any detangler, oil, nadda it was horrible. 😥

  49. Inside we are all the same, colour is so unimportant! It's just as relevant like talking about big or small feet…… It's invented by those in power of this world, to divide us…. when will people become smarter than that?

  50. So sad and totally understandable. Being able to pass as white made her life much easier, thats fact. Though I cant imagine that denying who she truly is didnt weigh on her constantly, I am just sorry that she had to make that choice.
