Using Google News to Find Current News Stories

“Music” One way to find current news stories about events in your chosen country is to search Google. In this video, I’m going to share some tips with you to make searching for news in Google more efficient and effective. If you go to Google and type in the name of your country, you will find new stories. Let’s use Indonesia as an example. The section that appears first in the results list is headed “Top stories”, and these are stories from new sources around the world. These are going to be the up-to-the-minute events going on in Indonesia right now. On the day I did this search, there had just been a terrorist attack in Jakarta, so that story dominates these results. You can find more stories by clicking on “More for Indonesia”. But you are still going to just be finding stories that are the most current things going on, and you might miss some important business stories that are not quite so recent but are still relevant. So let’s try a slightly different approach using Google News, a subset of Google that indexes only new sources. You can start a search in Google News by going to news.google.com. The Google News homepage includes some interesting features, like top stories and sections you can explore by topic, but let’s actually focus on searching for stories from here. If you type in your country name in Google News, you will see a difference in the results. All of them come from newspapers and blogs, and not websites. Even using Google News though, you’re still only going to be seeing very recent stories. To get around this, and to find some other cool ways to search, let’s look at the advanced search options. You access the advanced search by clicking the downward pointing arrow that appears at the end of the search box. The advanced search lets you play with your keywords, search for phrases, require specific words and eliminate specific words. You can also specify where you want the words to appear: in the article text, in the headline, in the URL. The date added field is where you can search for material that is older than the most current. You have options in the drop-down such as the last hour, the last day, the past year. You can also require that results come from a specific source such as CNN or the New York Times. And finally you can specify location, which seems to limit results to those published by sources in that part of the world. So let’s look at a quick example using the advanced search. We’ll search for Indonesia, which I’ll put in the first box; this will require that word in every result. I’ll add the words business and economy To the box called “at least one of these words”, since I don’t need both of them, but I would like either business or economy to be in each result. I will change date added to the past year. And click search. You’ll still see very current results at the top of this list but as you scroll down, you will start seeing some results that are older. For example, May 22, May 14th, and if you go to the next page you’ll see articles that were published in April for example. You’ll have to scroll through several pages of results to see more older material. If I wanted to force Google News to show me results from 2016 – say something I know it happened in 2016 and I want to find articles about that – I can go back to the top of the screen, you’ll see there’s a toolbar here, and click where it says past year and change that to custom range. Let’s set the custom range to January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. Click go, and you’ll see a dramatic difference in the results. Our first results in the list are now from January of last year. The only real negative about the advanced search in Google News is that you can’t go back to edit a search you’ve already performed; so if you want to change search terms, you will have to go and start all over again from news.google.com. But I think you’ll find Google News a very effective and efficient way to find new sources on the web. “Music”
