The Most Successful People Explain Why a College Degree is USELESS

Well, often times Business Education today, and I see it all the time Kids come out of college, the best colleges Wharton and Harvard and Stanford and some of the great business schools and they’ll come out and they won’t have practical experience. There’s too many case studies that aren’t practical. You know, we ask kids that are 16 to 18 years old to make $100,000 debt decisions when they go off to University, and they are not prepared for that. They don’t know what they’re getting themselves into, they just assume ‘Okay, I’m gonna pay four years of education at twenty-five thousand a pop and when I come out the other side somehow I’ll be able to pay it back’. Reporter: Right. That’s not how life works anymore. There’s no need even to have a college degree. At all. We’re in high school- I mean, if somebody graduated from a great university, that may be an indication that they will be capable of great things, but it’s not necessarily the case you know, if you look at say, people like Bill Gates or Larry Ellison, Steve Jobs these guys didn’t graduate from college but if you had a chance to hire them, of course that would be… a good idea. [laughs] I think having the flexibility to explore a lot of different things which you can do when you’re in college which is one of the amazing things about being in college is you can work on all these hobbies and encode a lot of stuff and try a lot of different things. It’s this amazing flexibility that I think most people take for granted and once you decide ‘Okay, I’m gonna start a company and I’m gonna do it with someone else’, you immediately now need to convince someone else if you want to change your mind on something, and I think people really undervalue the option value and flexibility. I think explore what you want to do before committing is really like, the key thing and keep yourself flexible. Interviewer: [chuckles] No, I think that that’s… Interviewer: Yeah, I agree. I mean, it’s actually kind of funny like- you know, if you think like ‘what is education’, like you’re basically downloading data and algorithms into your brain and it’s actually amazingly bad in conventional education ’cause like it shouldn’t be like this huge tour If someone is standing up there kind of lecturing at people and They’ve done the same lecture Twenty Years in a Row and They’re not Very Excited about It and In fact i think a Lot of Thing People Learn It probably There’s no point in learning them Because It that They never use them in the future because the like Kids Just in school Kinda Puzzled as to why they’re there i think The People Who are doing the work that we care about are Figuring Out What to do next not following the person who told them what to do next and the problem with most Colleges Is They are high school But with more binge Drinking The entire purpose of a Good University Is to give you a Foundation to fail Not a foundation to get an a and if You graduate from college with straight A’s you have to do some serious soul-Searching? As to why you chose to spend your time doing that a student’s Work for the b students The C students Run The Businesses and that These students dedicate The Buildings it’s like The Newspaper Industry Write more printing presses more Big Buildings write Makes this look Grander We Have Brains That we’re putting them Out there there’s There’s a Point of diminishing returns in Terms of What it’s worth for a college Education and How much Debt you’re Willing to sell Yourself with a Lot of People file a Lot of People are following if Not we’d have problems we Have too many Entrepreneurs we have too Many Successful people look how many People Go through Business Classes iF Everything You Needed Was in that Actual Business class in that book it’d be too Many Successful Business People Right How many People graduate Matter of Fact the professor Wouldn’t have The time to sit there and teach you He knows this book Damn near Broke a them page by page he knows all right cuz he be entrepreneur he too busy i’m Too i’m doing Way Too Much Right Now cuz i got the palm trees and We do It we Sell It so much Right Stuff that I’m doing that i ain’t quite got time to teach and so when You walk into a Boardroom With a Bunch of Guys in suits who all went to college you’re fine Yeah i Mean Because They Read a bunch of Words I’ve Lived a Bunch of life That Self-Esteem From Seriously I Mean Most My mom first and Foremost Just live in Life like you know being in real situations and Happen to be a person of High integrity and Honesty you Know you never embarrassed Yourself of Course not You never walked in and Said how Everybody Thinks I’m ignorant Here i’m stupid i Never i don’t i don’t Feel ignorant right you know i don’t ryan felt like i came up in this Situation or time you know where i wasn’t afforded Certain opportunities and if afforded Opportunities I could Be Oprah could be Bill Gates i could Be Warren Buffett in My Experience in Business There is Very little difference if Any Between a Very High-Priced Business Education and What’s available a Lot for a Lot less Money i went to the university of nebraska-Lincoln My last Year in college i went to Wharton for a Couple Years Before That I learned Just as Much At University of Braska As I did at Wharton you Need to be prodded in the right Direction but an Awful lot of It Is Self As Self taught It Isn’t Necessary to pay Thirty or Thirty-five Thousand Dollars a Year to go to some big-name School to get the Education at all i mean if you’re gonna Learn accounting if you’re going Is the probably the most important of Course You’d take in Business iF you’re gonna Learn to count you learn in accounting Absolutely as Well and My view going to you and Always going to harvard i mean i see i Would i bet on that and so i Wouldn’t run Up Huge Bills and Education Is Very Good at Training People to do the same Things that we’ve done over and Over again? And i think there’s Always a question What the nature of The Educational Good is You Know you can Say It’s a it’s an investment Good we’re investing in the future you can Say It’S a Consumption Good like college Is a Four-Year Party you Know i think most of the parents and students think of It Actually as an insurance Policy Where you’re Buying This Really Ever more Expensive insurance So that The students don’t fall through The really Big cracks in our society and We Should Be Asking some big questions why the insurance Costs are Going Up and Up like That and if you were the president of Harvard or stanford if You wanted to get a Lynch Mob of students alumni Faculty to come after you and try to lynch you What you Should Say Is something Like This you know we we live in this much larger more Global World We Offer a Great Education to everybody and so we’re gonna double or triple our Enrollment over the next 15 to 20 Years and People Would They’d All Be Furious because the value of The degrees comes from This Massive Exclusion and and What you’re Really running is something Like a studio 54 Nightclub i hate It i Hated School i Really Hated School i Really all i hated School Generally Right Because It Was this Instruction Following Thing Now i bet you it’s probably also Because i wasn’t good at It and some People Like I’ve Got a Great Conceptual rep Memory and a Terrible rote Memory so if i have a Story i could tell you Year By Year Kind of What Happened Within a Story Within a Context but if i was to go into You Know like a Memory Based Learning it’s terrible i have a Terrible Road Memory? Ego Barrier Is the worst Thing and if we Were raised differently Just imagine in the schools that all Along The People will always Say Everybody Makes Mistakes Everybody has Weaknesses the Key is really to Understand What Your Mistakes and Weaknesses are so that You can Learn from them right i think in Punishment is it’S a terrible Concept punishment means that You made a mistake and you’re being Punished i think Instead of punishment Every time somebody Makes a Mistake you Should Say The Only Thing that you need to do To get out of your punishment his first think What Kind of mistake Was that so if i’m in this Situation That’s like That Again How would i do deal with It differently not to make that Mistake so that Learning Should Come from The mistake not punishment because you’re teaching People not to make Mistakes Where’s Where the learning comes from Not the appreciation the if you keep Doing this over and Over again you’re gonna Keep encountering The Same outcomes you Know it’s an Extremely Corrupt System We Have at This point There’s we have an Education bubble in the u.s We have a Trillion Dollars of student debt To first approximation this has gone to pay for a trillion Dollars Worth of lies about the value of The education People Have Received And and i it’s not at all obvious Yet Though What’s going to What’s going to replace This or how it’s going to change My Um you know the the you know the and I’m somewhat Skeptical That It Will Be replaced By Any Sort Of single Unitary System and i have This fellowship for Young People to start Companies and You know it’s not my claim is not That Everybody Should Do This i don’t think everyone Should become an Entrepreneur and i think i think there is no one-size-Fits-All so i think the future will be much more heterogeneous Much more diverse in terms of What People do And What’s What’s Really Anomalous is the sort of Unitary tracking Where you have to go to an elite college You go to yale or you go to jail There’s nothing Else You can Do you know and so the The i think the universities are Perhaps in Perhaps in the same Place as the catholic Church Was in 1514 if we Go back 500 Years Where you have sort of This is monolithic Way newton’s universal Way of Body of Knowledge of teaching Things the difference Between the yale and the Harvard political science Faculties are probably No greater Than the differences between the dominicans and the franciscans we have all Kinds of small Debates Within This context? We are we Have a System of Indulgences That’s costing more and more to support this priestly or professorial Class of People We are told That it’s the only Way to Salvation You Must get a diploma to be Saved if you do not get a diploma then You Will go to hell And i think and i think the i think the the message that i have That’s like? The 16th Century Reformers That’s a Somewhat Troubling Message Is that you have to work out? Your Salvation on Your own you have to save Yourself and and And That’s That’s i think i believe that is the truth but it’s a it’S a somewhat uncomfortable one

  1. PLEASE READ –> Hi everyone, this is a completely different video than normal. Videos will resume back to normal on Monday with an EPIC video by Simon Sinek. I want to explain that College is a perfect solution to many, however to others it may not be a good fit. For myself, it was perfect, for one of my good friends, it wasn't a good fit. If you are currently in college, do not rely on that the piece of paper that you receive at the end to get you far, it is your own commitment and perseverance that will get you far. College is one of the best places on earth to develop networking connections with fellow students and professors, as well as create experiences that are extremely valuable. I want to emphasise that you don't need to go to the best and most expensive school to get the best education or be successful. My advice is to BECOME INVOLVED, make friends with as many people as possible, help others, and be true to yourself. I REPEAT, this is not a video saying that College is useless, but rather we put too much emphasis on a piece of paper, thinking that a degree is going to catapult us to great success. Make the most out of your time, go out there and make connections with other people, and take risks!

  2. Surely a degree would point you in the right direction though if you wanted to become a doctor, architect or astrophysicist ??

  3. All the data shows that the highest paid people (top 10 and 5%) in the States and Canada have a degree. Correlation doesn’t equal causation, but….

  4. I was always told by my parents that college is the best choice, they dont care for money as much as a degree, but i decided to change, i looked at life from different perspective, i left my second year at the med school, developed apps for people and created my own, i currently have 800k$ in my bank account and im only 20, and im animating stuff for fun, and i have all the time i want, just dont let anyone control your life, live free, think different

  5. Any they Facebook and Google demand people with Atleast Bachelors degree with 3-7 years of experience.
    What an irony.

  6. Best part about this is each one of these people have a college degree or went to college. What they mean to say is what is taught at college will probably not be useful to you. That piece of paper, the connections you make, and the experience you get, however, is worth going to college for.

  7. Well i dont know yet what would be my life after i graduated, but my parents always saying to me is my degree would be my weapon and thats how my life now. I dont have any skills of those who are riches but i have a weapon to practice my skills.

  8. If (mark_zack == dropout || dell == dropout || gate == dropout || lary == dropout){
    System.out.println(“They not went from collage”);
    } else {
    System.out.println(“collage is totaly useless);
    }

  9. I agree most degrees are worthless but these companies won't hire you without one although they say they will. Yes there's rare exceptions but it's highly unlikely.

  10. 2:40 It needs to be a foundation to fail (and then to progress from there), not a foundation for an easy A

  11. Someone needs to believe in a young person to gain that experience. The only thing I am gaining is patience while going broke.

  12. Most of these celebrities sold their souls in order to become “successful”. I don’t take advice on what it means to be “successful” from people with very little morality. These people are right about somewhat right about college but some of them went to college. It’s very difficult to get anywhere without your Freemason’s degree. Redefine success before these billionaire computer freak shows automate us out of living.

  13. I left my university four days ago, I did that because I want to study home, I know what I need to study and it going to be hard, but I'm glad of my decision. I loved the video !

  14. Honestly, it depends on what you want to do in life more than anything else. If you want to be involved in cutting edge research in String Theory, then you pretty much need a PhD in theoretical physics to do it (yes, I know Freeman Dyson technically only has a Master's but he had all the education that came with a traditional PhD without the piece of paper). If you drop out of high school, you're basically giving yourself a huge handicap that 99.99999% of people won't be able to overcome. This is true in most hard sciences. If you want to compete at the highest level, you need a lot of training. And you can't get this training in the modern world without a 3-4 year undergrad followed by a 3-6 year PhD.

    The examples in this video are exclusively aimed at business/entrepreneurship. Business is a field where practical experience seems to matter a bit more — according to the folks in the video — than academic training.

    tl;dr Think about what you want to do in life and chart the best possible course to get there. I wanted to become a physicist, and so I went to Boulder for a solid 4 year undergrad in Math and Physics and am currently working on a PhD in Columbia. Your mileage may vary.

  15. I've been a MD for the past 20 years, and all I did was drink a lot of brew. Degrees are useless af. Gimme some brew, and come get these bilateral surgeries.

  16. This is why I dont believe in free college. If college is free, what would incline others to not take it?! Free education! Those that would not take advantage would be looked down upon. Then what happens is that free college almost becomes as another highschool. Kindergarten, elementary, middle school, high school, college. We do NOT need to spend more of our lives like this.

  17. What they don't tell u is that to be successful u need to have rich parents to support u with capital, u can't afford to fail if u have limited funds like most people. The degree route is a safer and more practical way for most of us unless u r born a genius or get really lucky in a niche market.

  18. To be fair people get degrees in ridiculous fields like fashion design, liberal arts, philosophy etc . If you get a bachelors degree in a good field like engineering or computer science accounting, etc. As long as it has a good job growth and a decent salary to pay off the debt it’ll be worth it in the long run but learning a trade and becoming a electrician or a plumber is worth it too. It’s just if your willing to put in the work.

  19. this applies to geniuses and entrepreneurs not to all people. a doctor would need to study properly the human body, lol also just people generally that need to learn stuff should go to schools. this thing with people hating on college degree trend has to stop. i get that the society and parents push on this thing so much like if you dont have a degree you won’t have as much money and jobb opportunities and sometimes is not fair because maybe you don’t need it but you can be succesful either way. i am konda sick of rich ”self made” peope who come up now and say how easy it was for them to become what they are and didnt even need a degree. good for you but maybe is not like that for everyone.

  20. I'd rather be rich with a college degree than being rich without it. Dude it is so interesting to see two people with a PHD talking and the successful guy with no college degree is lost. Education is elegant. If you go to school to be successfully rich? That's another thing. I love going to school because I am curious.

  21. for me, most important in my life is Time and i do not want to waste it. School is useless for me now because you do lot's of projects, studies that i was not aiming for, quizzes and in my school, there are lots of bullies which i wasted my time in their activities. i only succeed what was i am aiming for, not school and help humanity like them on this video. my friend have concerns that if you finnish college, you do not know where to start, what to do, and what experiences you need to gain. 14 btw and im going to encyclopedia for quick learning but youtube is quicker. but encyclopedia is most of my time studying because it has recommendations

  22. A college degree might not be very useful in practice, but in some countries is the only way to even get an opportunity for a job interview.. I find that strategy very flawed but in less developed countries it is necessary for no reason…

  23. I'm going to a trade a trade school to become an electrical technician I struggled in math in hs for the lack of not paying attention which I now regret and that's what we do a lot of in the books..but most of it we will not use our instructor is a masters electrican and had his own buisness and has 30 years of experience and teaches us everything out of the books but hits hard on the stuff that we will actually use our in the field and he feels putting so much time in the books is useless some time is good but more hands on training is better and every chance we get we do hands on and since he is a masters electrican we already get hours of experience so after this 7 month program we will all have around 1000 hours of experience before actually even getting the job and should know how to do plenty more than some noobs who didnt tho to a trade schook to become an electrician like we already did conduit bending the basics and we are going to have a whole section over learning conduit bending and doing even more hands on with it. I have a great instructor so far and he actually cares that we learn stuff that we will actually use. If you learn how to bend conduit well you can start off at around 26 dollars an hour since it is becoming a lost skill in the trade! But u wont to become some what decent in every basic thing an electrical apprentice should know as we already have our license and I am only two weeks in the school! It is very fast paced but if you apply your self and have a great instructor as I do you will actually learn the stuff you need to know you dont need to go to school as our instructor didnt but it will give you a bit of a head start and for people like me I knew nothing about electrical so that is why I am going rn. 🙂

  24. "COLLEGE DEGREE IS USELESS."
    But WOULD YOU HIRE ME WITHOUT ONE ? HUH? YEA WHAT HAPPENED TO WHAT YOU JUST SAID ? Yea i thought so. You're not speaking entirely the truth and hiding it by saying "ITS MOTIVATIONAL", its actually GARBAGE INFO FOR REAL LIFE.
    The fact is College degree is useless, ONLY IF YOU'RE PLANNING TO ACHIEVE SOMETHING HIGHER THAN THAT AND ARE ABSOLUTELY PASSIONATE AND DEDICATED ABOUT THAT
    There, I just completed that sentence for you guys.

    Dont get me wrong, I dont support the current teaching methods and examinations either.Self learning in a stress free environment at your own speed is obviously better. That being said, calculate the time & effort you're ready to devote and ofcourse, the money you're capable of spending for any X activities which are needed to achiveve your goal AND ONLY THEN SHOULD YOU MAKE THAT/A CHOICE.

    I'm NOT hating on this video, peace out.

  25. You don’t necessarily need to go to college to be successful in life. Some people end up spending all of it on student loans. He who understands, earns it… he who doesn’t understand, pays it. Change my mind

  26. But would you hire me without a degree. I have a string of experience, contactable references with no degree and have worked my ass off to get to where I am knowing I couldn't afford college education, but I know definitely you will hire the one who has a degree. SIMPLE.

  27. My mother trying to get my sister to go to college. She wants to do business i told her its not worth it for business because billionaires dropped out of college or never went so something is wrong with college especially the business degrees.

  28. imagine wanting to do engineering but having no degree. yea i know nothing about mathematics/physics/natural science but hire me as an engineer plz

  29. These people get mostly rich through personality difference opportunities and chance ..ya of course it doesnt matter at least for them cuz most people with no degree make less money and can only rely on luck and opportunities to get good money

  30. 40 years ago an engineering degree from a top school meant that you were qualified in the understanding of physics, chemistry, quantum mechanics, electronics, to build complex systems, in, say, semiconductor devices. With all the emphasis on IT and coding, yes, there has been less need for the understanding of underlying physical science,, because there is no underlying physical science to code, per se (except for specialized applications of course). (Yes, there is the notion of abstract "Computer Science" and "Software Engineering" but these are conflated with coding). There are fewer disciplines that require the rigorous training of the university context. There is NO WAY you can learn silicon device physics properly outside of a rigorous university context even today. NO WAY you can be a theoretical physicist or astronomer. NO WAY you can be a molecular biologist. Or a classicist. (good luck find a program in classics). Yes you can learn Javascript and SCRUM and blockchain and math and economics (sort of) but no one is going to let you perform a pulmonectomy if you do not have 1. a bachelor degree, 2, a medical degree, 3, have performed a residency and internship, 4 passed your boards, 5. been licensed by the state, and 6) been accepted into a practice. And 7 found an insurance company who will pay you. And that will cost you 12 years and $350K, not counting 12 years of forgone income in some other discipline.

  31. Do you seriously want to drive across a highway bridge designed by someone without a degree in structural engineering?

  32. I feel like this is more true for the USA 🇺🇸 but Universities everywhere because they are significantly more expensive than college and it’s too much information in 1 field of expertise which would explain why people with degrees can’t branch out in said field.

  33. Look college degree is worth it for almost many because my fathers youngest brother positioned in United Arab Emirates and goes to world 🌎 tour for doing his job as an engineer. And degree is needed to live a life to the fullest.
    Actually, I am not normal person since, I am in my teenage and no morals like Justin Bieber not grown up though I am grown up.
    I am a final year college dropout 👩🏻‍🎓 and I have keen interest in cleaning 🧹 whatever is inside of human body and very much interested in learning about functions and organs of human body. But, same time I have a phobia of diseases. I always think 🤔 based on logic. I come in this dropout category like bill gates, Mark and Steve Jobs.

    I get panic attacks when I hear 👂 about c diseases and pray to god in the middle of the night that no one should get cancer ♋️ disease finally, cherries 🍒 and pine Apple much more can cure this’s.

  34. Everyone wants to be rich the formula is easy but to apply the formula
    only the rich know it and they apply it everyday. I know this formula
    and I will reveal it to the whole world very soon.

  35. I agree put in a putting your children in college changed your environment if you got a large university it seems that they will believe in Socialism Communism they have to could be closed

  36. The c students are the ones who own the businesses that the A student work for them this is a very good reason why we have to close the colleges plus they cost too much and large universities teach our children to be socialist communist

  37. Not worthless when it comes to seek a good job and the defense industry. However I get the point you can learn pretty much anything outside of school with the Internet these days

  38. In our country, college isn't a necessity. Only people who got low marks or didn't graduate high school require college. 90% of the students go straight to uni. College is seen as a place where all the bad students have fun here.

  39. My teacher of english always say you learn by the mistakes to the A student but I've always got punishment. Bcs why not

  40. The reason they require you have a degree is because it shows you follow rules and do what you are told. If they hire someone without it they are at risk! Still having a degree or certificate of better than nothing.

  41. elon musk is a ususry goon and tax parasite who got 10billion from governmetn and company only worht barely that he should be burned for treason

  45. really enjoyed watching this video: college degree and no job, becoming an entrepeneur: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9P5FCaU2VXU

  46. My hopes of going back to school are nearly gone for good. Watching this video makes me wonder if it’s even worth it now.

  47. You should only go to college if you get into one like Oxford or Cambridge, tbh.

    But only go to college if you're planning on being reliant on a job through your life, don't go to college if you want to be a entrepreneur; college will just pull you down and delay your wait to success.

  48. College is way overrated, overpriced and often not worth it.  Consider the absurd cost of attending, the lost opportunity cost of investing in IRAs, 401ks, much delay in marriage, buying houses and cars, not even having children and 4 years of lost wages.  College also delays young people from maturing, wasting away in the college life of drinking, sex and drugs.  Colleges need to simply charge less for their educations, stop ripping off students for many courses in liberal arts that lead to nothing more than wasted time and money.  Why not have high schoolers go to college for only two years and just get the skills they need for work and do it online from home? And if you don't know what your interests are or what to major in, go to work for a while and discover what you enjoy and/or are naturally good at rather than wasting tons of money and time in college! Most colleges and universities are degree factories making fortunes, largely being fed by the loan business and engaging in primarily liberal indoctrination. I have a degree from the early 1980s yet hardly ever found work paying more than $3-10 an hour yet by age 40 was debt free, happily married, raised a child through college, bought houses and cars in cash and now travel the world and am free to what I want because I KNOW HOW TO MANAGE MONEY – Author of Peace, Strength and Common Sense.

  49. Watching this after discovering I’m failing leadership & management in Nursing theories…a Masters in Nursing will not raise my salary..I just thought I should engage in motivating the future nurses..I guess NOT!!
