Meet The Woman Who Learned That Her Mother Passed As White | Megyn Kelly TODAY

>>>A SECRETIVE MOTHER, A GRANDFATHER SHE HAD NEVER MET AND A FAMILY HISTORY SHE NEVER EXPECTED. GAIL COULD NOT HAVE PREDICTED WHAT SHE WOULD DISCOVER WHEN SHE DECIDED TO DIG INTO HER MOTHER’S MYSTERIOUS PAST. WATCH.>>THIS IS MY MOM AND DAD. AND AS FAR AS I KNOW, MY FATHER WENT TO HIS GRAVE NEVER KNOWING MY MOM’S SECRET. MY PARENTS MET DURING WORLD WAR II. MY MOM WAS AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING LLY BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. MY DAD, HE HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. HE SERVED IN THE PACIFIC. HE WAS VERY PROUD OF THAT.>>Reporter: IN 1944, AFTER THE WAR, HAROLD MARRIED OLIVEIRA FREDERICK. THEY SETTLED IN PALMA, OHIO. THROUGHOUT HER CHILDHOOD, GAIL SAID HER MOTHER MYSTIFIED HER IN SOME WAYS.>>SHE WAS METICULOUS ABOUT HER MAKEUP. SHE WOULD WEAR A LIGHT FOUNDATION MAKEUP TO BED AT NIGHT, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS A LITTLE STRANGE. SHE WOULD NEVER GO OUT IN THE SUN, UNLESS SHE HAD A WIDE-BRIM HAT. SHE WOULD COVER HER HANDS WITH GLOVES. DIDN’T LIKE TO BE IN THE SON.>>Reporter: BUT GAIL SAID THE BIGGEST MYSTERY WAS HER MOTHER’S SELECTIVE MEMORY WHEN TALKING ABOUT HER OWN FATHER.>>I SAID, MOM, WHEN HE WAS BORN? WHEN DID HE DIE? I DON’T KNOW. I CAN’T REMEMBER.>>Reporter: GROWING UP, GAIL NEVER SAW ONE PHOTO OF HER GRANDFATHER. FINALLY, IN 1995, WHEN SHE WAS 48, SHE DECIDED TO SEARCH FOR HIS IDENTITY, COMBING THROUGH MICROFILM.>>AT FIRST, I COULDN’T FIND HIM. THEN, I PUT IN THE 1900 LOUISIANA CENSUS RECORDS AND I SEE THE NAME. THERE ARE ALL THESE FREDERICKS IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD. I NOTICED SOMETHING CURIOUS, NEXT TO ALL THEIR NAMES IS THE LETTER “B.” I GO TO THE HEAD OF THAT COLUMN TO SEE WHAT IT STANDS FOR. AND IT SAYS RACE. I THOUGHT, “B”? DOES THAT MEAN BLACK?>>Reporter: GAIL WANTED TO CONFRONT HER MOTHER. BUT FIRST, SHE REACHED OUT TO THE STATE OF LOUISIANA, REQUESTING HER MOTHER’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE. I PRETENDED I WAS MY MOTHER AND I LOST MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE. I OPENED THAT BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND IN THE PARENTHESES, THERE WAS COL. AND I SAID, MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE SAID COL, CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THAT MEANS? THEY SENT ME A VERY OFFICIAL LETTER BACK AND SAID, COL IS FOR COLORED. I WAS SPEECHLESS. I DIDN’T KNOW IF MY MOTHER KNEW. I AM THINKING, HOW COULD SHE NOT KNOW THIS? AND WHY HAS SHE NEVER SAID ANYTHING TO ME?>>WE’RE JOINED BY GAIL WHO HAS WRITTEN ABOUT HER MOTHER’S SECRET PAST IN A NEW BOOK “WHITE LIKE HER.” THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH.>>YOU DID WORK UP THE NERVE TO ASK YOUR MOTHER ABOUT THIS CERTIFICATE. YOU SAT DOWN WITH HER. YOU KNEW IT HAD TO BE FACE-TO-FACE.>>THIS IS NOT A CONVERSATION YOU HAVE ON THE TELEPHONE.>>AND YOU ASKED HER WHY SHE’S LISTED AS, QUOTE, COLORED ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE.>>I DID. I TOLD HER, I FOUND A BERTH CERTIFICATE. IT SAID COLORED. SHE BECAME VERY INDIGNANT WITH ME. SHE SAID, I DON’T KNOW WHAT BIRTH CERTIFICATE YOU HAVE, BUT MINE SAYS I’M WHITE. I SAID, WAIT A MINUTE. I HAVE OTHER KUDOCUMENTS I CAN SHOW YOU. THE CENSUS RECORDS, YOUR FATHER IS LISTED AS BLACK. AND I HAVE A LETTER FROM THE STATE OF LOUISIANA SAYING THAT COL MEANS COLORED. SHE GOT VERY QUIET. VERY QUIET. AND SHE IS SITTING IN THIS LARGE CHAIR. IT SEEMED LIKE THE CHAIR WAS SWALLOWING HER. SHE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID, YOU HAVE TO PROMISE ME YOU WILL NEVER TELL ANYONE UNTIL AFTER I DIE. AND THEN, SHE SAID, HOW WILL I HOLD MY HEAD UP WITH MY FRIENDS IF THEY KNOW?>>WOW. WHAT YEAR WAS THAT?>>THAT WAS 1997, WHEN I CONFRONTED HER.>>SO, SHE HAD SPENT HER ADULT LIFE PASSING, A TERM YOU USE IN THE BOOK.>>YES.>>CAN YOU TELL THE AUDIENCE WHAT THAT IS?>>SHE WAS PASSING FOR WHITE. MY MOTHER, IF YOU LOOK AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF HER, SHE VISUALLY LOOKS WHITE. ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND IN THE CENSUS RECORD, SHE IS LISTED AS COLORED OR BLACK. WHEN SHE DECIDED TO MARRY MY FATHER, WHO BY THE WAY, IS WHITE, SHE MOVED NORTH TO OHIO AND FROM THAT MOMENT ON, SHE TOOK ON THE WHITE RACE THAT SHE PASSED. SHE WENT FROM BEING DESIGNATED BLACK TO BEING DESIGNATED WHITE.>>YOU WRITE IN THE BOOK ABOUT THAT MOMENT THAT YOU SAW COL AND KNEW IT TO BE COLORED. AND WRITE ABOUT THE DAY I FOUND OUT I WASN’T WHO I THOUGHT I WAS. WHAT DID YOU GO THROUGH UPON THIS REALIZATION?>>THE INITIAL DISCOVERY WAS 1995 WHEN I WAS AT THE FAMILY HISTORY CENTER. I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THIS. I WALKED INTO THAT FAMILY HISTORY CENTER A WHITE WOMAN. TOTALLY CONVINCED I WAS A WHITE WOMAN. AND I WALKED OUT OF THERE AND I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS. I DIDN’T KNOW IF I WAS MIXED RACE, IF I WAS BLACK, IF I WAS STILL WHITE. I HAD NO IDEA. IT WAS SHOCKING TO ME. YOU KNOW, LIKE FINDING OUT YOU’RE ANOTHER PERSON THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW.>>RIGHT. AND YOUR MOM IS ANOTHER PERSON. I KNOW YOU WRITE IN THE BOOK ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL NOW IN RETROSPECT. SHE LEFT CLUES FOR YOU. LIKE LITTLE BREAD CRUMBS THROUGH THE FOREST. WE’RE GOING THE TALK ABOUT WHAT SOME OF THOSE WERE ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT GAIL SAYS HER OWN

  1. Funny she doesn’t identify as black which by America standards she is … but although she puts her mom and profits from it .. she isn’t giving up privileges… how can I be racist I have black relatives

  2. like honestly this bothers me I know this lady needed a story but really you made a show out of this stupidness !!!

  3. i didn’t know my dad was chinese until i did a D.N.A. test. i found out my family is indo-chinese 🇭🇰🇮🇳

  4. That’s sad that a black person has to put makeup on and be white in order to get treated better. That’s really sad.

  5. The new trend isn't to "pass" for white if you can. It's to MAKE yourself white with skin bleaching, blonde wigs and light colored eye contacts. It's the Black Aryan movement. What's going on?

  6. too much feminine smiling when there is nothing funny or happy about your wise words. cut the compulsory smiling. be direct. be serious.

  7. Her mother wore makeup because “you want to look your best, you’ll be treated better at the hospital.” Hear that? If the hospital thinks she’s black, Hispanic, or brown in general, she’ll get worse treatment than someone perceived as white.

  8. Her mother passed during an era where being black could get her sprayed by water hoses, attacked by dogs or hung from a tree. I can see how she saw it as survival.

  9. I feel like her daughter should have just left it alone. There must have been a reason her mother wanted it kept a secret. The fact that her daughter went behind her back and fished for information about her mothers race and selling a degrading tell all book to profit off of it. Sounds like a horrible mommie dearest daughter over all.

  10. LMFAO… I am dying inside right now, this woman said she didn't know what she was after she found out that she had some African American heritage in her bloodline. Last time I checked it makes you the exact same person you were when you walked in and found out some people I just ridiculous LOL.

  11. What do you people called black? And the black people on the post saying he married a sister…. Nonsense… If y'all can trick a whole race of people that you are white hooneeyyyy YOU ARE WHITE!!!!!! , black people wanna talk every thing and label as black but that's a white woman who looks like she had some good tan!!!!! Besides america isn't the only place in the world, other parts of the world saw her as white, she just had more white in her than black

  12. Americans are so stupid with race… So since her mother was " black" and America has this stupid one drop rule so must we assume that this woman on the show is black? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 GTfoh

  13. My grandmother also avoided the sun as she would get “too dark” and was kicked out of places that were “white only”. And we don’t have any African or black ancestry (according to my DNA).

  14. Her mother had black blood – as all whites do – due to the the Slavery period in America. There are no pure black and white people in America. The truth hurts doesn't it.

  15. Am I crazy but at this point I don’t think she is back. She is mixed.

U are a white women. Yes mixed but u totally white. That’s how u grew up and how u will be treated. U are the same person just more details in ur bloodline. My opinion

  16. 1681 Maryland the place they passed the law that created, White People, that was the beginning of all the racist bull suit we had to suffer ever since. And why was the term White People used for the first time in 1681? Because the poor British workers were unifying with the Africans, including marrying them and this unity threatened the elite British land owners so they came up with a way to separate the masses and that way was not by religion or nation but color. And over the next 100 years more laws were passed which made it far better to be white and stripped blacks of everything History they don't teach you. It was all a construct this race stuff to protect the elite with new soldiers, White people. The term can not be found in any British writing until Maryland 1681. Go read The Creation of White People by Professor Jacqueline Battalora .and learn some true American history.

  17. Great to see someone pass as White. More often we see white people trying to pass everything in history as white. Lmao. Everyone was in the bush until white people showed up. Until you look closely at the artifacts and find chipped lips and destroyed noses.

  18. 5:29 "It was like finding out you were a different person . . . " It's interesting that there is so much mental emphasis on race, a made up characteristic, that changing that label can instantly make someone feel like a different person.

  19. African American women come in every skin shade my grandmother was the the same way she was black and she look white because my grandpa was white and she had to passed for white to get better job

  20. Yup…there’s a LOT of families like this! I have some that did this and my friends family did as well.

This is why I laugh at racists…you don’t know WHAT’s in your family tree until you shake it hard enough!😂👍🏾💜💙

  21. I'm a mixed race man. I'm light Olive colored. But because I have Black inside me, from both my Father and Mother, I can very easily. And when I can, I first turn reddish because I am an Choctaw Indian. (GADITE OF THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL). and then I can get almost as dark as an Ethiopian. And I have green Eyes. And black ) curly/wavy hair, that teaches down to my shoulders. And I am lean.

  22. When I first saw her picture, without hearing the story, I knew she had black in her. My skin is a little tanned than others because I have Indian blood in me. I guess people see what they want to see.

  23. A really fascinating story.

As professional as Megyn Kelly is, you can't have certain people interviewing on issues like this concerning racial issues. She just comes across as disingenuous.

Really should have chosen someone else.

  24. I'm sorry but her momma ain't black. She has so much white in her, it ain't even funny. Run her DNA, she is showing up 90% white. Stop it. This drop of black blood isht is ridiculous.

  25. Seriously Meghan Kelley whose racist act on Fox includes the infamous 'Santa Claus is white' show, where she goes on record demonstrating her racist mindset.

  26. Her mom was actually right: there is evidence that whites do get better treatment than blacks in the medical system. See: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK220337/
White privilege is still pervasive in so many domains in our society; we need to keep working to eliminate these inequities and barriers.

  27. Oh shes got a book to sell makes sense. Race is trendy right now so people exploit it for political & financial reasons otherwise it's not a thing.

  28. That serves her dad right! Here he went thinking Blacks were inferior and all that time his father in-law was a brotha. LOL. Now just imagine all the anti-LGBTQ guys out there who are probably married to a transgender and don't even know it.

  29. Is this a disaster?
Black is still human. Isn't it?
If you are white no one is going to ask to see your birth certificate. You don't meet people and say hi I'm Julie, I'm white.
    I hated the whole thing

  30. What does this matter and why is this the subject of a show? This seems racist, stupid and the woman seemed devastated about finding out her mom was black, dumb woman

  31. White ain't no such thing as a white person weak minded weak genes hate the sun dad hate melenated people stay pale and receive the judgement of the pale rider
