We are the Mandara website team. It’s a news website about Upper Egypt. The idea came to me in 2010, when i participated in a 2-month fellowship in the United States. It was organized by a news organization called World Press Institute. I saw 2 news models that were very successful. The Bay Citizen in San Francisco and The Chicago News Coop. They are very hyperlocal, providing news reports covering a small area in the United States. They are like news outsourcing providers … helping bigger newspapers in reducing their costs and big newspapers depend on them as sources to cover these local areas. We are a team of five. 4 journalists and 1 programmer. My name is Hanan, I’m the founder and a freelance journalist. I worked with Rosa Youssef magazine for 5 years. I resigned and now I’m working on this project. Another team member is Sarah Al-Shereef. She is a freelance journalist that used to work with Al-Ahram newspaper. There is also Alyaa from Al-Shorouk newspaper. Abdel-Samea works with Al-Akhbar newspaper. He’s from Qena from Upper Egypt. Ahmed is our programmer, he’s building our website and is our IT manager. What’s new about this website is that we are a local news website which is rare here in Egypt. We are also a non-profit. We hope to become a good example of a free and independent local news media. And others can replicate this model in other in other governorates like the Delta and Sinai.
