Kingdom of the Little People

Português Português Português Português Português Welcome to Kunming, “Spring City” of China. [Sound of seagulls] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos reacts with surprise and laughs] [Sound of seagulls] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Kunming is the capital city of the Yunnan province, in southwest China. The weather here always brings to mind early spring. But, I didn’t come from the depths of winter in New York for the weather. I came to check out a very peculiar and controversial tourist attraction, (located) about an hour outside the city, that people have been talking about for years. A place called “Kingdom of the Little People”. [Music] [Chime sound] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: From what I saw on TV, I expected it to be “The Wizard of Oz” on acid. On arrival, I realized (that what) was touted as a magnificient, and whimsical theme park, was really a run-down, abandoned place that made me instantly feel uncomfortable. [Chime sound] [Sound of vehicle driving past] This is “The Kingdom of the Little People”. [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: “Kingdom of the Little People” was founded in 2009 by wealthy real-estate mogul, Chen Mingjing; and, as you can imagine, has since been the centre of a lot of controversy. Media outlets like the Daily Mail, The New York Times; and organizations like Little People of America and Handicap International have criticized the park with claims that it’s the equivalent of a human zoo, and that (the park) only serves to increase negative stereotypes. Even Warwick Davis, the famous English actor of short stature who played Willow, has openly expressed his distaste for the establishment. But, I wanted to see what the park was really about myself. [Music] [Clapping] [Rap music] [🎵Haters be illin’ when they see me killin’ on the floor.🎵 🎵Looks like I’m missing competition from the roof to y’all.🎵 🎵I know you’re looking at me, I know you’re wantin’ more,🎵 🎵You like those apples? Well, I’m bad, baby; to the core!🎵 [Rap music] [Woman reacts with surprise] [Audience cheering] [Audience clapping] [Rap music] [Sound of crowd] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: My name’s Annette. I like your outfit. Is that the character that you play in the show? So, in between shows, do you get to hang out and- you know, read books, or..? What do you like to do? [Crowd playing tug-of-war] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: At first glance, the little people we met seemed exceptionally cheerful, but I wondered whether it was their directives to appear pleasant at all times; which would be in line with most theme parks, but most theme parks are not almost exclusively stuffed with little people. However, I’m not going to lie; while speaking with them, I became confused about whether I should approach them like children or adults. Perhaps, that was because the park’s higher-ups tended to treat their shorter staff members like kids, even though their ages range from 19 to 49. [Crowd playing tug-of-war] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: How old were you when your parents told you that you weren’t going to continue growing? [Sound of balloon being inflated] [Balloon pops] [People laugh] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Employees here mainly suffer from two forms of dwarfism: disproportionate dwarfism, the umbrella term for genetic disorders that cause unusual proportions of their body parts; and proportionate dwarfism, which results from hormonal deficiency. What they all have in common, is that they’re no taller than 4 feet, 3 inches; which is the main requirement for working as a performer at the Kingdom. [Sound of crowd] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: One thing about the Kingdom, is that performers who work in such close proximity sometimes fall in love; like Aifang and Chenjiao, a couple I met who have been dating for over a year, and who both suffer from proportional dwarfism. [Chengjiao Shu]: Hi, hello! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Hi! [Chengjiao Shu]: Hello. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: (I’m) Annette. Chengjiao Shu]: Ni hao. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Nice to meet you! [Woman]: Ni hao. [Chengjiao Shu]: Nice to meet you. Hi, ni hao. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Okay. So, what was it that made you want to switch careers and come to this place? [Sound of audience] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: The little people who work at the park come from all different backgrounds. They make a monthly salary ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 RMB which is roughly the equivalent to what a university graduate would make in the area. They hold positions throughout the company, ranging from accountants to sales representatives, creating a nearly self-sufficient community of their own. [Chime music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, Aifang and Chengjiao are going to take us upstairs, to get a look at what it’s like backstage. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Whoa. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: These stairs are a little.. to small for me. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: [Laughing] I’m afraid I’m going to fall backwards. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Ah, great. [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What are they doing inside here? [Music] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: [Holding back laughter] This is amazing. [Music] [Sound of the park] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: After the show is finished, we all got onto the exclusive bus service offered by the park, and headed toward the dorms to eat lunch, and (to) see where the performers live. [Whistling music] [Sound of chickens] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, what’s in here? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What is that? Are they pets, or.. do you eat them, or..? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Can you pet them? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos giggles] [Music] [Music and sound of people] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: This is the two-floor building, where men and women live on separate levels. It has 20 rooms, and can accomodate over a hundred people; though, saying it’s a tight squeeze would be an understatement. [Music] [Keys jingling] [Music and sound of keys jingling] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Which is your bed? [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs shyly] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What are some of your favourite things to do when you’re hanging out in your room? [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: [Laughing] Aww! [Flute rendition of The Blue Danube plays] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Flute rendition of The Blue Danube plays] [Flute rendition of The Blue Danube plays] [Sound of typing on on computer keyboard and the door creaking shut] [Door shuts] [Sound of typing on a computer keyboard] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Hey! [Sound of typing on a computer keyboard] [Chengjiao Shu]: Oh, hello! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What’s goin’ on? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, how many people live in this room with you? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Do you think, maybe, you can show us some of your friends’ rooms, too? [Chengjiao Shu]: Yes, yes! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Good/Okay. [Music] [Man]: Hello! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Nice to meet you! [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Mhm. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: I see (that) you have a lot of, uh, LeBron James on your wall. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, you watch a lot of basketball, I take it? [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Well, I really like your room. I mean, do you guys ever sleep in the same room, or you- do you have to sleep upstairs and he has to sleep downstairs? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Mhm. And, what is it that you guys like about each other most? [Aifang giggles shyly] [Chengjiao laughs shyly] [Translator]: He likes that she is very cute. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Well, it says “I love you” and “My heart belongs to you” above your bed. Where did that come from? [Translator]: Aww, his heart belongs to her! [Chengjiao Shu laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Romantic music plays] [🎵Love is love🎵] [Guitar] [🎵Let’s talk about love🎵] [Guitar] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: And, do you think eventually, one day, you.. would want to have children? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What do you think the future holds, for the both of you? [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Well, what- what do you think of organizations that don’t support the park because they believe that, by the performances, it might be drawing negative attention to the community? [Music] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: After spending a day here at “Kingdom of the Little People”, getting to know everyone, watching their performances, and learning about their everyday lives; I’ve come to the conclusion that the controversies surrounding the park don’t really matter at all. Because here, they found a place where they can really be themselves; and, in the end, that might actually make it a magical kingdom. [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Music] [Basketball dribbling and music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Look out! [Basketball dribbling and music] [Man laughs] [Basketball dribbling and music] [Music] [Sound of camera shutter] [Basketball dribbling and music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs]

  1. Itโ€™s very sad that they feel the need to go here to be accepted. My understanding is that China is a very harsh society when it comes to different individuals. Instead of isolating people why not integrate and empower.

  2. I got an ad for a bank wich the tagline was "the little can do a lot" or something like that … There was a guy sitting on a bench with a smaller version of himself ๐Ÿ˜ถ๐Ÿ˜ถ

  4. From king dumb of the little brains , fuck you libtard losers ! Go make up some more genders rocket scientist oh and enjoy 2020 pussies

  5. โ€œPeople like us canโ€™t have childrenโ€. Fertility can be problematic but thatโ€™s not universal. Little people have kids all the time. I would like to know if he meant they are discouraged, forbidden or sterilized.

  6. once again….proving that people are happiest around their own kind. but America? nooooo……let's integrate everybody and freak out when they kill each other!!!

  7. I really liked this particular documentary, but I would have appreciated it if more had they used the actual terms for the types dwarfism the little people at the park suffer from, and not just "proportional and non-proportional." Achondroplasic is the term used for non- proportional, but many people wouldn't know that. Come on Vice…

  8. 2019… China keeps these people away from regular people. Socialism or better known as Communism… Back in the day these kids would have been in an orphanage.. Yes this guy gave them hope but its China..

  9. 15:19 โ€œWe donโ€™t really have any dreamsโ€ That is so sad to hear. But seeing his positive outlook on life is inspiring.

  10. What's the difference between taller people working at a theme park such as Disneyland dressing up like characters and shorter people who do? They are doing all the same things except maybe look cuter doing it and perhaps taller people can learn not to be underestimating of shorter people.

  11. So glad this showed up in my feed… Happy people, living happily together, being…..happy.

  12. Little people big on being happy๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ…

  13. They seem to have a well running, safe and functional society unlike anywhere in Africa or the Mideast ….go figure.

  14. What did he mean when he said people like us can't have children? CUS I have heard of little people in American HAVEING children, I wonder if it's a physical or legal RESON ? Like maybe in there country that are forbidden to have baby s when he said that can't she looked very sad ! That have to be careful cud THAY are a perverts and cho-mos dream come true !

  15. When I started watching the documentary I was expecting a place where they were mistrited , but it was a nice surprise to see a good hearted community they have build .

  16. What do you call a lil person who is a psychic and wanted by the law ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, small , Medium , at large ! Haa

  17. U cant have a human zoo, but a animal zoo is fine?! Thats why tornado's and earthguage exists, To get rid of most of us stupid people

  18. Shallow people like me make fun of them but i cried watching this especially when he said โ€œpeople like us canโ€™t have childrenโ€ and โ€œwe donโ€™t have any dreamsโ€ and so many more things

  19. We're all just people & shouldn't make fun of each other out of BEING different. Comedy is fine to release the stresses of life but to look down upon MALICIOUSLY on Anyone is just a shame.

ONE LOVE. ONE RACE.. the ONLY race.

  20. i was kinda hoping there actually was a kingdom filled with little people and like they used steam punk medieval weaponry and like waged war on humanity

  21. This video has touched me deeply. It makes me realize how people, all of us, are so alike — we all want connection, companionship, acceptance, love and to enjoy our lives that God has given to us. God is good, as God loves us all! This video brings out in me a feeling of love for my fellow humans.

  22. If dwarfism was a majority then I would be in their place. It's not the size it's the mind, the stereotype we have created

  23. How much are these little people for? I would like to buy 1 or 2. Perhaps 2 cause i wouldnt want them to be lonely. Please tell me how much they cost?! And what foods they eat and how to properly care for them cause im new to this.

  24. Well the young girl of the couple is extremely depressed. The "Chinese government" told them that they couldn't have children, not because they can't physically, THEY CAN, but because they are so gd stupid and think that if they do, they'd be breeding humans with more obvious abnormalities. Which is only a 50/50 chance. She's going to be shocked when she wakes up pregnant some day. I wish these adult could be adopted and brought elsewhere.

  25. Im happy for them. I hope one day i can visit there, not to see the show but to share a meal with them and laugh. At the end of it all, were all the same. No matter our size or color. We all want to be happy.

  26. Good for those people can have happiness in there own world
The bigger world have to many idiots living in it

  27. This is a place of belonging for many. Perhaps more colonies like this could arise and accepted, the income for them is another factor the people need. I think they are happier than ever before. Tolerance of the differences of others is nearly extinct for humanity. Shameful.

  28. EXCELLENT! AWESOME! WONDERFUL! ๐Ÿ’• Love does make the World go around ~ They ALL seem to get along very well! They are Happy and have PEACE!

  29. Itโ€™s very wonderful creative idea ! Truly help them from material and mentally .
Give my Thanks and respect !

  30. I was so HAPPY to see people from all over the World, have come together with a common goal, and successfully making it work for All.๐Ÿ˜„

  31. Yes , just shut up about the place , in the hypocrisy Western country , thus people may be taken care of by social workers , but I'm %100 sure these people will get bully on a massive scale .

  32. AWW I WISH THEY WERE HERE IN AMERICA. BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY WOULD SEE THERE IS NO LIMIT ON LIFE JUST BECAUSE OF THEIR HEIGHT. I THINK THE PLACE IS OKAY BUT I ONLY HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THEM BEING SUSTAND TO A CHILD LIKE MINDSET WHEN THEY ARE ACTUALLY FULL GROWN HEALTHY PPL SHORT HEIGHT OR NOT. WE ARE HUMAN. AND CAN FUFILL ALL THE DREAMS THEY WANT. AND IT HURT ME TO HEAR THE YOUNG COUPLE SAY "PPL LIKE US CANT HAVE KIDS". THATS NOT TRUE. THEY CAN REPRODUCE. I FEEL THE PPL THERE COULD POSSIBLY PUTTING THAT STIGMA IN THEIR HEADS

  33. There are always people outraged over places like this but fail to realize what would happen if it did not. A novelty to some is a way of life to others and if this park was done away with what would these people do where would they go but the park is designed to allow them to be normal while out side things like stairs can be hell for small people. I do think the dorms could be upgraded a bit but how they live is their choice none of us have the right to force them into a different lifestyle to make us fell better. Banning this park would have horrible consequences for all those performers. Dont forget that this gives those born like this hope and a chance to work and live as a person in a community they fit in without persecution from those who see them as a joke to be bullied and hurt for fun. The more people go and see and the more money they make the better they can do so for those who want to help spend the money and go see them.

  34. The reporter was doing her best not to seem creeped out but she was. What a wonderful but strange place . God bless them.

  35. THIS IS A WONDERFUL IDEA!!! I LOVE IT!!! A special place where ALL little people can feel accepted, appreciated, normal & loved for who they are… PEOPLE with jobs just like you and me.

  36. What a blessing that they have a job that they are proud of and live somewhere they enjoy. I live in America and I am still working towards that goal! Good for them!

  37. I would love to visit this place. I think itโ€™s a great thing that one man created a community of little people. They are very comfortable with each other, they have friends and even some love for each other. No other place on earth offers a environment like this. They have careers and are paid well. You can tell that they can be themselves without worry of being made fun of or mean comments from non little people. I think their living conditions could be majorly improved. That is the only thing I see in this video that needs attention. To even call it a zoo is cruel. They are not animals locked in a cage. They are people living their lifeโ€™s by choice. They are not made to stay there I am sure. If I were a little person I would want to live there. I am adding this place to my official bucket list. I think itโ€™s great and this idea changed the lifeโ€™s of each and every one of these people all positive. ๐Ÿ‘

  38. I think they deserve private apts. with a window for one thing. It could be a lot better there, maybe even a small pool. Computers are not everything. How about pea patches for them too. I could go on but what's the point?
