hello my name is Rob Trhlin and joined
alongside me is Amanda Palombo and welcome to the first episode
of Penn State Beaver’s B:30 where we will keep you updated on the most recent news and updates on all
of Penn State Beaver’s athletic teams we will be covering all of the sports news here on
coaches, players, and upcoming games now let’s go out to Anthony Lamont one of our field reporters who recently
caught up with coach Marcess Williams of the men’s basketball team What’s going on everybody, I’m here with the Penn State Beaver men’s head
basketball coach Marcess Williams How are you doing?
Pretty good, pretty good I’m just going to ask you questions about season
and you can talk as much as you like If you could use one word
to describe the season so far what word would you use?
All over the place up and down you know
record wise we’ve had a good season but you know as far as you know
personnel, we lost a lot of guys this year we haven’t really
been used to losing a lot of guys at the break to academics and that kinda got us this year but the guys that
we have you know they have been fighters
they work hard every day and we’ve been able to
accomplish a lot so you know this when I say all
over the place, I mean it’s a lot of good it’s a lot of bad it’s
some frustration you know it’s some good times and
we’re just approaching a fun time in the year My job is to keep us all together keep us all rolling in the same
direction towards that goal which is winning the conference championship
That’s going to lead us to the next question and it was going to be where do you see this team at the end of the season Talent wise, we’ve got a lot of talent on the floor I honestly think we can win definitely can compete but I think we can win a conference championship National championship that’s tough there’s a lot of good teams out there I know we are voted number one in the country right now we just lost the other day but so we won’t be number one for long So we’re looked at as one of the top teams out there We just got to come to work every day We let one slip away the other day to Greater
Allegheny they played phenomenally, we just could never get it going but you know those happen you know what I mean rather lose those January
games than March games so we’ve just gotta learn from it
hopefully today’s practice is the first step to learn from that and Alright and for those who don’t know who’re gonna watch this and don’t know Who are the team leaders know who your horses who guys that you’re always going to have on the floor at one point or another Yeah, well were blessed, we have three probably the best players of the league Chris Weathers, a Senior is averaging
19 points a game Nick Miller another senior is averaging
about 20 points a game and Rob Agurs is our leading scorer averaging 23-24 points a game he’s a sophomore Sophomore athletically, Junior academically
he took a red shirt year when he tore his meniscus so
those are three guys that you know the game play kind of revolves around but we have another Senior Marques Royster you know Chris Best comes of the bench he gives us a little bit junior point guard Tiere Phillips another junior that kind of really contributes to
what we’re doing then we have some younger guys, Ignacio comes off the bench, we have some other guys
Roger Rhoden and players like that who really are role players so those big
three though you know put up big numbers
those are the ones that you know a lot of the game play is revolved around Definitely, your style of playing is exciting to watch, its awesome full-court press, pass break offense.
Do you ever think that’ll change or will the guys on the floor always have the green light to push
I mean as long as I’m coaching Division 3 or Division 2
basketball that’ll be my style No matter where I’m at what part of the country i’m in I always
think that were able to recruit that kind of athlete now like I said our roster has
kind of changed from first to second semester so first semester we were literally going twelve deep and now we’re probably around 8 deep which you know with that style you would like to go at least double digits just in case there’s foul trouble or whatever but yeah I don’t think it will change
I mean I like that style I like you know I think the guys like playing that
way you know we like teaching that way it’s an energy about the game’s we
never really you know that in the three yearsof us playing like that I can count on one hand how many times we came out out flat that’s not really a problem we have the problems that we have playing that
style is can we keep it up playing back
to back games like in a tournament style setting we played can we play 3-4 games on the road and win a championship like that that’s the question’s that have been having because you know we’ve come up short the last couple years made it to the championship last year
lost on an offensive rebound foul that they called on us, so Those are questions
yeah but as far as the way we will play that’s it man That’s as good as it’s going to get it’s fun to watch you guys, you can tell you guys pack the gym everybody loves to come watch you guys play
I appreciate it, our fans are huge to us I’m a big football guy so you know I look at the Seahawks 12 man
and you know that stuff, that means something when that crowd gets going I was thinking that the other day when we lost to Greater Allegheny their crowd got going and it was crazy it was a good
atmosphere and they fed off the crowd and when that game
was over I mean it was kind of like *sound*
And half of them rushed the court the teams over there they weren’t there to shake hands at first like it was a big deal and it you know you
do feed off of your crowd we like to have local guys so we get a good draw We like to bring in the good crowd and we
like to put on a good show for the crowd Like I said the styles not changing that’s one constant, I think me and the staff like to coach that way and the players like to play that way so it’s a good fit
Well I know you’ve got practice to get to so I’m gonna wrap it up here and I wish you
nothing but the best of luck on the rest of the season and I will be
there to broadcast every single game I appreciate you you guys do a great job. Like my mom and my grandparents when they can’t to the games man they look forward to the game, they get mad when we go to other places and they can’t watch it they go “oh we don’t got you guys” so you know we appreciate what you guys do and you know you guys are part of it and I appreciate you No problem man
thanks a lot
now we will switch gears to women’s basketball who have recently been dominating In the PSUAC You are right Amanda and as they just came
away with two wins this weekend over and Penn State York and Penn State Mont Alto and the ladies have really been playing on fire
this past couple weeks as they’re really jelling together playing
great defense and very unselfish basketball as you will see in my interview with
Coach Moore Rob Trhlin and I’m here joined
alongside me is coach Moore for the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions now Coach Moore you’ve been here
for six years been an assistant coach for three and
head coach for three what’s the one thing you love about being head coach
The one thing I love about being a head coach I think is most is you get to build your own program it’s not somebody else it’s yours
so you know the things you do the success you have it’s ours as a team but you know it’s all under my control yeah that’s good and you guys are doing
pretty well this year in the conference your tied for first 4-1 tell us about that how have the ladies been
handling this year It’s been a tough year because
we’re young we have all freshman and sophomores so coming in to the year we had to reteach pretty much all of our defensive strategies offensive sets so there has been a lot of growing this year you know over the last couple games I
really think that you know we probably started reaching our peak a little bit just based on how we played and things
we’ve done so I have a good outlook on the rest of the year very nice and you have five upcoming
conference games coming up which one of those games you
think is going to be the toughest for the ladies to handle you
Probably the toughest overall will be Monday night against Penn State Greater Allegheny that’s one of our rivals Greater Allegheny is tough, they’ve always had a good team
They just beat Penn State Fayette from the other night which really helped us out so you know they’re going to be gunning for us next and we’d like to hold that number one spot I think that’s all I’ve got for now, thank you coach Moore for your time and we wish you good luck in for the future and that’s it
we now have a special guest in the studio Sophomore wrestler Devante Phillip, Devante suffered many injuries throughout the season and he’s ready to bounce back
Devante obviously you suffered an ankle injury at the mid-part season, how does it feel now towards the end of the year
It’s feeling a lot better then when it first occured but I feel as if I can bounce back into the weight room back into the swing of things but wait until it fully heals to go 100 percent
Now the team has had a really rough season so far but how do you think you’ve contributed to the team
I feel as if I contributed to the team by helping my other teammates as well as
having a full potential to go my hardest and influence my other teammates to go hard as well You know I’m up here a lot obviously and I see you guys in here wrestling
all the time now what what is your drive what is your motivation to you know to push your teammates and do the extra things to take that extra step
I just feel like as if in any team as well as on a wrestling team is that you push forward your teammates as well as yourself then victory will be closer then what you think So that’s why I go hard all of the time but still have fun all my teammates as well
of course you know you you gotta have fun no doubt
Now do you think you are going to be back this season or do you want to take some time off what do you think your
I’m definitely going take some time off and recover from this if anything learn my lesson from is to key in on smaller you know workouts to make sure
little things like this won’t happen again
Now when you said you are going to time off are you gonna like take some
time off be done for the year that get ready for next year what are your plans for the rest of this year
Well the plans rest of this year are to rest my ankle, still
stay in the weight room focus on my school work and hopefully just still contributing to rest of the team as much as possible, go to matches and stuff like and just keep influencing my players You said school work tell everybody at home what is your major exactly, what are you going to Penn State for
My major is Biology and pre-medicine and my future occupation I want to be is Hematologist, a blood doctor
Who do you think is going to win the Super Bowl I feel like the Seahawks are going to win That’s who I’ve got to win too
Ah No. Underdogs.
Marshawn Lynch the beast mode he’s gonna get it
You think so, you think beast mode is going to get it? and Michael Robinson a Penn State alumni is his full back by the way if you guys haven’t had a chance check out that interview with Michael Robinson and Marshawn Lynch You can check that out probably on ESPN it’s pretty funny and that will actually do it for this week’s episode of Penn State Beavers B:30 we would like
to thank everybody for tuning in Have a good week everyone
